Nature of the work
Construction ironworkers build and erect the girders and columns
used in building bridges and other structures. They place and install
reinforcing steel in concrete construction. Ironworkers perform
many of the tasks in placing, raising and joining these all together
in order to form structural framework.

Ironworkers also install steel stairs, hand rails, metal doors
and frames and they do repair work such as replacing metal bridge
parts. They work with all ferrous and nonferrous metals, as well
as pre-cast and pre-stressed concrete structures.
|
|
Working conditions
Ironworkers work both indoors and outdoors, but mostly outdoors.
The trade requires top physical strength and the ability to work
at great heights. The work involves much stooping, climbing and
reaching.

Workers often move to job sites in the Local's jurisdiction
in Eastern Washington, Northern Idaho or Western Montana. In the
Inland Northwest, ironworkers generally plan for seasonal unemployment
in the winter.

|
Employment outlook
Strong construction activity in the Inland Northwest
and the increased use of structural steel and reinforced concrete
in buildings and bridges is expected to keep employment strong in
this trade in this area for the foreseeable future.
